December 2008

I’ve often been interested in offering a prayer for our country. But frankly I’ve never found one in a siddur which seems adequate. For our November 7 Shabbat evening service, therefore, I wrote one myself. (The ending is a paraphrase from Martin Luther Kind.) See if it captures your sentiments as well, and, if so, let’s send it heavenward.

Adonai, Guardian and Protector of Life,

Bless our nation as you bless our world.

Help us to do our part in serving as your partner in carrying out the tasks put forward by your prophets: alleviating hunger, poverty, disease and homelessness; empowering the dispossessed, and promoting justice within our borders and around the world.

Let us be grateful for the unusual gifts which have been provided to us, and let us exercise wise and generous stewardship of these resources.

Let us do our part in exercising wise and sensitive stewardship of our endangered planet.

May we, in our generation, be vigilant in pursuing peace in the world.

And, in the spirit of Tikun Olam, our great covenant with You, let us be proactive in helping to facilitate understanding among the peoples of your world.

May we be blessed with leaders deeply committed to these ideals, and willing to participate actively and cooperatively in the community of nations to help achieve them; leaders able to serve selflessly and humbly on behalf of all families and individuals. Let them bring hope to our nation and to the world, and let us, as citizens, do our part.

Adonai, We as a nation aren’t yet what we want to be;

We aren’t yet what we ought to be.

We aren’t yet what we’re going to be.

But thanks to you, Adonai, we have hope – and the determination to make that hope a reality.

Amen

B’Shalom,
Jim
