October 2005

I’m writing this from South Africa where I’ve been invited to deliver a keynote address at the International Nutrition Congress.

Some of you may get to read this column before Rosh Hashanah services. Others may see it between the holidays. In either case, a few thoughts about our prayer together may be helpful.

I am struck as never before by the degree to which our lives are filled up – with our phones, computers and televisions responsible for a growing proportion of that fullness. Some of this has considerable benefit. Being so well connected, it’s hard to remain oblivious for long to both the beneficent and the dangerous which surround us.

The downside of all that "fullness" is that we are inadequately in touch with ourselves, with our inner voices, with our souls if you will, or, dare we say, with God. We are so busy doing and responding that we are largely deprived of this opportunity and, inevitably, we are the poorer for it. For, surely, it’s those inner voices that put us in touch with the essence of ourselves – allowing ourselves to ask, and seek to answer such questions as:

"Who am I in the midst of all this activity, in the midst of all this noise?"

"What is that better self toward which I’d like to be moving?" and

"What is the example I’d like to be setting for my children and grandchildren?"

So, happily, the High Holidays are here – and with them the rare opportunity for us to let go, to turn off the phones, and the internet, and the TV, to calm the mind, and then - together with Jews from all over the world (and poignantly connected with our ancestors) – to allow ourselves to hear the inner voices.

Let’s not miss this opportunity, and let’s allow ourselves to sink into it fully. I, for one, can’t wait – and I eagerly look forward to this special time together.

Gut Yontif, Jim
