Because we have few paid employees, we rely heavily upon the energy, commitment, good will, and expertise of our members in order to achieve our mission to create an effective and well-run spiritual and communal institution. To further our goals we depend upon our Board of Trustees, all of whom give their time and talent on a voluntary basis. In turn, the Trustees lean on the next tier of synagogue leaders—those who chair and serve on committees. Because there are many committees at BAJC, the work of any one committee is not too time-consuming but, since only a small fraction of our members volunteer to serve on these committees, we tend to rely on a small number of folks to do the holy work of the temple. One of the things we have learned from the member coffee klatches we have had so far is that many people are unaware of all the committees we have and of how to get involved. This is one problem easy to solve. A list of all our committees, along with their mission and chairperson follows my message. Take a look at it and pick a committee on which you’d like to participate. You can call the chairperson or me to get more information about the work of the committee, when it meets, and who else is on it.
Please consider that people involved in a temple’s committees tend to have an increased stake in the synagogue’s welfare. The more members who attain this sense of ownership, the healthier the congregation is likely to be. As we effectively organize and utilize our wealth of human potential, BAJC will not only grow but, in fact, it will strengthen our congregational community.
B’shalom,
Marty
