February 2005

Faced with the overwhelming impact of the tsunami, the sniffles and coughs that accompany winter in Vermont fade into insignificance. Nonetheless, as I cared for our two sick daughters last week, taking temperatures, cajoling flushed-faced girls into drinking just a little more water, I found myself thinking about the topic of health. Most of us have a general idea of what we need to do to maintain our physical health. Even if we aren’t always able to do it, we know that we need to eat fruit and vegetables, exercise regularly, and get enough rest. But what about our spiritual health? And what about our intellectual health, if I may call it that? How do we keep our hearts, minds, and souls strong?

I’m sure that the answers to these questions vary from person to person, and even the same individual will have different needs over time. Prayer, yoga, gardening, long walks, reading . . . there are many ways that we can exercise our minds and spirits. I’d like to recommend another way to maintain our health this winter and spring: our adult education programs. Our fabulous volunteer Adult Education Coordinator, Andi Waisman, has put together an absolutely amazing slate of courses and monthly gatherings, ranging from courses on Hebrew to Tallit making, from an interfaith discussion group to a Jewish Vocal Music Jam. The courses are all free for members, and available to non-members at a small fee. So take advantage of these wonderful opportunities, and maintain your health! Hope to see you at some of the classes and monthly gatherings,

B’shalom,
- Rachel
