Random Acts of Kindness
|

Selma at the 2002 Annual Meeting

We are told that the month of Ellul, just preceding the
High Holidays is a time to prepare ourselves mentally and
emotionally for the Days of Awe. At BAJC, we have initiated
a wonderful tradition of focusing during this month on “random
acts of kindness” that we can perform for others: acts
of kindness for others from which we ourselves derive no
discernible benefit – except of course the inner glow
that results when we create such "Messianic moments” for
others.
Examples of “random acts of kindness:”
- Visiting a shut in, an elderly person or a person
who is ill
- Writing a letter of appreciation to a present
or former teacher
- Helping an overworked individual get through
the day
- Providing support to a person from a racial or religious
group which has been under attack
- Paying the toll for the
car behind you at the toll booth
- Marking the back of your
Vermont license so that, upon your death, your
organs might save the life of another.
