Eminent
Rabbi Participates in BAJC Service
On Saturday May 22 Rabbi Everett Gendler joined Jim
Levinson in leading
Shabbat morning services at West Village Meeting House
and afterwards led a discussion over lunch on the
subject of “Judaism
in the World Today.”
Rabbi Gendler, for many years a congregational rabbi
in Lowell Massachusetts,
and the former rabbi at Phillips Andover Academy, has
been for the past two
decades in the forefront of American Jewish activity
relating to the Middle
East
and is an authority on the subject of American Jews and
Israel.
Rabbi Gendler grew up in Iowa and served as a rabbi
in Mexico before settling
in
New England. His commitment to the environment is reflected
by the solar
powered
Ner Tamid or eternal light in his Lowell synagogue.
In addition to his involvement in issues of Judaism
in the world, Rabbi Gendler is an authority on Hasidic
texts, and particularly the life and writing of Levi
Yitzhak of Berdichev.
