"Songs of the Soul" Concert
Phyllis Issacson and Gideon Efrati will present a concert of traditional
ethnic music from many lands, to benefit the Brattleboro Area Jewish
Community, on December 20th at 8:00 at the West Village Meeting
House. Called "Songs of the Soul," the concert will reflect
everyday life, humor, hardships, longing, love, prayer and faith,
and hopes for peace through music from Yemen, Morocco, Spain, Eastern
Europe, Persia, Israel, and the United States.
Many of you already know what an accomplished pianist and conductor
Phyllis Issacson is in both classical and jazz styles because we
are occasionally lucky enough to be able to hear her performances
in our local area. She has also performed as a piano soloist with
the Boston Pops, founded and directed the Cantate Chamber Singers
in Washington, D.C., guest-conducted many All-State and District
choral festivals. Here in Vermont, she produced the Tuesday night
summer concert series at the Memorial Hall Center for the Arts in
Wilmington for five years. She performs in both the classical and
jazz styles for concerts, private parties, and clubs.
Israeli Gideon Efrati, a graduate of the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem
and Tel Aviv, is a tenor soloist, conductor, composer, arranger,
and pianist. He has performed world-wide in both classical and contemporary
music and frequently conducts workshops and master classes in Europe
on the subject of Jewish and Israeli fold music.
Reserved seats are $18 in advance and $20 at the door; open seating
is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Patron donations of $50 or
$100 include two reserved seats. All tickets are tax-deductible.
Checks can be made out to BAJC and mailed to PO Box 2353, Brattleboro
VT 05303, or call Faith at 257-1959 for information or to make reservations.
Since December 20th is the second night of Chanukah, we plan to
honor the holiday by lighting candles together just before the start
of the concert. Bring your candles and menorahs and we will fill
the room with the warmth and light of this special holiday, just
as Phyllis and Gidi will fill the room with warm and wonderful music.
