Night
One—Chanukah Celebration in Westminster West
Westminster West’s second annual community celebration of
the Festival of Lights will be held on Friday, December
19, featuring a live performance by the Wholesale
Klezmer Band, along with latkes, joyous dancing, stories
shared and the lights of many menorahs filling the windows and brightening
hearts.
The Wholesale Klezmer Band specializes in making traditional Yiddish
and Hebrew music accessible to English-speaking audiences with a
repertoire that includes songs for peace and arrangements that inspire
joyful dancing. Consisting of accordion, flute, trombone, clarinet,
violin, flute, bass viol and percussion, Wholesale Klezmer has been
performing since 1982 throughout the region, and they have several
delightful recordings.
The celebration, free of charge, will include a potluck dinner,
dreidle playing, storytelling, and candle-lighting at the Westminster
West Congregational Church at 5:30 p.m. For more information
call 387-5788.
Night Two—Chanukah Concert
If you are attending the “Songs
of the Soul” concert on the second night of Chanukah,
bring your menorahs and candles and we will say the blessings, light
candles, and sing together as the concert is about to begin.
Night Five—Chanukah and Book Discussion
If you’re going to be at Mel and Norma’s house for
the SJBC discussion, bring your menorah and candles for the fifth
night of Chanukah.
Night Six—Ner Shel Tzedakah
The URJ has joined with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs
and the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism to sponsor an initiative
to fight poverty. Jews across North America are asked to consider
the deplorable fact that one in ten American families lives in poverty.
In order to alleviate the suffering of the poor this winter, individuals,
families and congregations are asked to devote the sixth night of
Chanukah to learning about the problem of poverty. As you light
the “Ner Shel Tzedakah” we hope you will donate the
value of the gifts (or the gifts themselves) that you would otherwise
exchange on that night to organizations that assist the poor.
Night Seven—Annual Chanukah Après-Ski Open House
at Faith & Abe's
What do Jewish people do in Vermont on Christmas day? Our answer
to this “December dilemma” is the same as it has been
for the past seven or so years: Ski free at Mount Snow, then come
to an après-ski party at our house to celebrate Chanukah.
We’ve been doing this for years, even when Chanukah did not
happen to coincide with Christmas, but this year we will once again
be able to light candles—seven candles!—as we celebrate
Chanukah together.
This is the deal: Windham County residents can ski free at Mount
Snow on December 25th in return for a donation of a non-perishable
food item. After skiing (or even if you DON’T ski), come to
our house in West Dover to enjoy munchies and non-alcoholic drinks.
Bring your menorahs and candles and we’ll add some latkes
and dreidles to make it a traditional Christmas day in Vermont!
The party is meant to be a fundraiser for our BAJC building, so
bring some Chanukah gelt to donate.
Please let us know at least a couple of days in advance who (and
how many) will be there, and to get directions if you need them.
All members and friends (and any of your house guests) are welcome,
including non-skiers and kids. Plan to arrive any time after the
lifts close, or as early as 3:00. We look forward to welcoming you.
